3 Comments Is it time for a little holiday detox? The New Year is less than three weeks away. Cocktail parties, dinners, charity events, and an overbooked schedule and lengthy to-do list often leave us feeling overwhelmed, stressed and fatigued this time of year. And holiday celebrations--as wonderful as they may be--are often accompanied by an excess of food, drink, and stimulation that take a toll on our bodies and minds. It's not too late to find some balance this season; don't wait until the New Year to start taking care of yourself! Now is the time to thrive, glow, and radiate your best self--the whole season through!
Pumpkin Spice Milk 11/21/2011
Almond milk is a staple in our home. Plain almond, vanilla (made with whole vanilla beans and extract), chocolate (made with raw cacao powder), and even strawberry milks (made with fresh strawberries from the farmers market in spring) have all made appearances over the years. But fall is my favorite time of year to whip up a batch of creamy Pumpkin Spice Milk.
Autumn Red Juice 11/18/2011
What a gorgeous fall we are having up here in the Finger Lakes! And just because the temperatures are getting cooler--and the ground is covered with the first dusting of snow this season--it doesn't mean you have to pack up your juicer. In fact, fall is the perfect time to start juicing some of your favorite fall fruits and vegetables!
I love New York. I do. I love the changing seasons and the bounty of new food each season brings--especially in the Finger Lakes. I love the numerous farms and farm stands that I pass EVERY day--whether I am going to work or out running an errand. I love the yoga community and access to sweaty, hot yoga in the winter (even if I don't practice in the studio as often as I would like). I love the abundance of farmers markets and CSAs--all of which make accessing local food so incredibly simple that you barely have to set foot in the grocery store from June through October. And perhaps my greatest New York love during the beautiful fall season: apples.
Creamy Cauliflower Soup 10/24/2011
First of all, I want start by thanking you for all of the positive comments and wonderful feedback regarding my last post, "Raw Food: All or Nothing?" on One Green Planet. If you missed the article, please read it here and let me know your thoughts. My hope was to dispel some of the myths surrounding raw food diets. I also wanted to encourage readers to include more raw food into their diets--at any level--for good health. Afterall, who couldn't use a few more fruits and veggies in their diets?
So now it's time to make room on your plate for one of my favorite cool weather veggies: cauliflower. Raw Food Diet: All or Nothing? 10/20/2011
When I began exploring raw food diets a few years ago, the most common question people asked was “how raw are you?” As I researched raw food diets further, I discovered that many individuals define their raw food diet in terms of the percentage of raw food they consume each day. It led me to wonder just how raw a diet needs to be to harness all of the wonderful health benefits I had been reading about, and whether or not a raw food diet is superior to one that incorporates a mix of both raw and cooked plant foods. The good news: a raw food diet does not have to be an all-or-nothing endeavor; anyone can begin to incorporate more raw food—at any level—into their diet for optimal health and vitality. Welcome fall! This is my favorite time of year in upstate New York. The leaves are just beginning to transform from green to beautiful yellow, gold, and red hues. My garden is producing what will be the last of our homegrown edibles for the season (okay, I admit, I only have a few bunches of celery left). And I am finishing up my final food prep for the winter including freezing fruits and vegetables and preparing and freezing a variety of sauces. As the temperatures begin to drop (40s this weekend!), I begin to crave warm and hearty dishes (think soups, chili, various rustic baked goods, and liberal use of warming spices). And these cool temperatures send our family to the pumpkin patches and apple orchards in search of the best of the season.
Raw Pasta with Pesto Sauce 09/23/2011
One of my favorite raw dishes to create (and perhaps one of the simplest) is raw pasta. And knowing that the days of summer squash will be coming to an end, I decided that this would be the week I would whip up a few extra batches of zucchini pasta with pesto sauce.
